The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a revised schedule for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, setting new dates for key polls across the country.
According to the commission, the presidential election will now take place on January 16, 2027, marking a shift from earlier expectations. The announcement forms part of INEC’s broader efforts to streamline preparations and ensure a smoother electoral process.
In addition, elections for state governors and members of the State Houses of Assembly have been fixed for February 6, 2027. The staggered arrangement is expected to allow electoral officials better coordination and logistics management nationwide.
INEC assured Nigerians of its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and inclusive elections. The commission also urged political parties, candidates, and voters to take note of the new dates and begin necessary preparations ahead of the polls.
Observers say the early release of the timetable could help reduce last-minute uncertainties and give stakeholders ample time to plan for the electoral season.
