The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has introduced a new national framework aimed at tightening control measures and reducing the growing problem of substance abuse across the country.

The initiative, known as the National Drug Control Master Plan (2026–2030), is designed to address weaknesses in previous strategies while strengthening efforts in prevention, treatment, and enforcement. Authorities say the plan will place stronger emphasis on reducing drug demand, particularly among young people, while also disrupting supply chains operated by trafficking networks.

Chairman of the agency, Buba Marwa, explained that the updated roadmap focuses on a more coordinated and inclusive approach, involving communities, government institutions, and international partners. He noted that tackling drug abuse requires not only law enforcement but also sustained public awareness and rehabilitation programmes.

According to him, the plan seeks to close existing gaps in Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign by improving collaboration at all levels and expanding grassroots interventions. He added that the strategy will also strengthen monitoring systems and ensure better implementation of policies nationwide.

Officials expressed confidence that, once fully executed, the new framework will significantly reduce drug-related challenges and improve public health and safety across the country.
