Media Caution Urged as Governor Nasir El-Rufai Flags Politicians Masquerading as Activists

Kaduna State’s governor has called on journalists to be careful in how they interact with certain figures in public life, warning that some politicians are posing as activists to push their own agendas and weaken democratic values.

Speaking at a Ramadan fast‑breaking event with media professionals, the governor said Nigeria’s democracy could be harmed when politicians adopt activist labels only when government decisions do not favour them. He encouraged reporters to question such individuals closely and not take their claims at face value.

The governor praised journalists for their historic role in advancing democracy, noting that many risked their freedom in past struggles. He urged them not to let those sacrifices be undermined by people he described as “conflict merchants.”

He also challenged the media to focus on issues that directly affect citizens—such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and unemployment—rather than allowing political actors to stoke division along ethnic and religious lines.

In addition to his message for the press, the governor highlighted some of his government’s development efforts in the state, saying progress has been made in road construction, healthcare improvements, and reducing the number of out‑of‑school children.
