The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has expanded its reach, providing financial support to more than 1.16 million students across Nigeria. The programme, which started in May 2024, has now disbursed over ₦206 billion to assist students in covering tuition and living expenses.

Under the initiative, funds are split between direct tuition payments to institutions and allowances for students’ daily upkeep, ensuring that beneficiaries can focus on their studies without financial strain. So far, 270 public tertiary institutions have participated in the scheme.

NELFUND also continues to see steady interest, with nearly 2,000 new applications recorded daily. The programme is designed to help students from all backgrounds gain access to quality higher education, removing financial barriers that often prevent enrollment.

Repayment for the loans is structured to begin only after graduates secure employment, promoting financial responsibility while keeping education affordable. Officials say this approach ensures the programme remains sustainable while supporting Nigeria’s next generation of professionals.
