Ngozi Okonjo‑Iweala Honoured as Champion for Women’s Economic Progress

Dr Ngozi Okonjo‑Iweala, Director‑General of the World Trade Organization and the first African to lead the body, was recognised with the GAIA Africa 2025 Global Champion Award for her influential leadership and commitment to advancing economic development.

The award was presented at a ceremony in Lagos, where organisers celebrated Okonjo‑Iweala’s role in shaping global economic conversations and inspiring women across Africa and beyond, even though she was not present to receive it in person.

Organisers of the event praised her decades‑long work in international trade and development, highlighting her as an example of vision and resilience. Guests at the ceremony also welcomed new members into the GAIA Africa network, which connects accomplished women working in business, policy, and leadership.

In a video message, Okonjo‑Iweala thanked the group for the honour and underscored the ongoing need to empower women economically, noting that stronger support and networks can help unlock broader prosperity for communities and nations.

The event also featured a keynote address that encouraged women to stay resilient and committed to leadership, reinforcing the theme of perseverance amid challenges.
