The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has rolled out over 100,000 access cards to drivers nationwide following major disruptions at airport tollgates. The cards are part of a new cashless entry system intended to replace traditional cash payments with prepaid or electronic methods.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, revealed that around 62,000 cards were issued within the first three days, reflecting the high demand from motorists trying to comply with the new system.

The rollout caused significant traffic jams and long queues at major airports, including those in Lagos and Abuja, with many travelers delayed or missing flights.

In response to public outcry, President Bola Tinubu ordered a temporary suspension of the cashless toll system, allowing airport gates to revert to previous payment methods while authorities refine the digital solution.

Officials emphasized that the pause is temporary and that efforts will continue to implement a smoother electronic payment system for airport access in the near future.
