The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a fresh security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.
The alert comes about a week after the embassy cautioned U.S. citizens about potential protests in Abuja linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
In the latest advisory released on Monday, the embassy urged American citizens and travellers in Nigeria to exercise heightened vigilance and adopt additional safety measures when visiting U.S. facilities, including the embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos.
The embassy advised individuals to vary their travel times and routes, remain aware of their surroundings, avoid predictable routines, and review security precautions with family members to reduce potential risks.
Other recommended safety measures include maintaining a low profile, keeping mobile phones fully charged in case of emergencies, staying alert in public spaces, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, and identifying emergency exits when entering buildings.
Last week, the embassy cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday, citing the high likelihood of protests in Abuja related to tensions surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict.
According to the mission, earlier demonstrations by some groups over the conflict had resulted in violent clashes between protesters and Nigerian security forces, prompting the embassy to take precautionary steps to protect its staff and citizens.
