“Power Outages Ignite Protests Across Lagos”

Lagos, Nigeria — Tuesday, March 12, 2026: Thousands of residents in Nigeria’s largest city flooded major streets today to voice their frustration over prolonged and unpredictable electricity outages that have left homes, businesses, and public services struggling without reliable power.

The demonstrations, which began early in the morning in Lagos Island and spread into Ikeja and Surulere, brought traffic to a standstill as protesters marched with placards decrying “darkness and hardship.” Many voiced anger at what they describe as chronic failures in the national power grid and frequent load shedding imposed by electricity distributors.

“We are tired of paying for silence,” chanted marchers, referring to the high cost of electricity bills despite scant supply. Business owners said the outages have hurt trade and forced many to rely on costly generators to keep shops and offices running.

Electricity firms, including distribution companies serving Lagos, have acknowledged the ongoing challenges, linking erratic supply to gas shortages and constraints in power generation, which have limited output on the national grid and triggered widespread rationing of available electricity.

Public transport services, hospitals, and markets in several districts reported disruptions, and commuters described long waits and confusion as roads were blocked by protest groups pressing for swift government action.

So far, authorities have not issued a formal response, but analysts warn that deeper structural problems in Nigeria’s power sector — including generation shortfalls and supply chain issues — could prolong the crisis if not urgently addressed.

This unrest follows earlier warnings from industry experts that mounting debt between gas suppliers and power companies may further restrict fuel supply to generating plants, potentially deepening outages nationwide.
