Tambuwal Defects from PDP to ADC

Former Sokoto State governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tambuwal, who previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and completed two terms as governor of Sokoto State, announced his resignation from the PDP on Thursday. He said the decision followed extensive reflection and consultations with political associates.

In a message shared on his official X account, the senator confirmed that he had formally notified his ward chairman of his resignation from the party in writing.

According to him, the PDP played a major role in shaping his political career, and he expressed appreciation for the opportunities the party provided during his time as Speaker, governor and now senator in the 10th National Assembly.

However, Tambuwal said developments within the party made it difficult for him to continue as a member. He explained that his move to the ADC was driven by the need for a stronger political platform capable of deepening democracy and advancing national development.

He stated that he believes the ADC offers a structure built on integrity, accountability and inclusiveness, which he considers necessary for Nigeria’s progress.

Tambuwal also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, justice and national unity.

His defection is not entirely unexpected, as he had been actively involved in the emerging political coalition around the ADC. The senator also maintains close ties with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whose 2023 presidential campaign he directed under the PDP.

Tambuwal now joins other prominent figures who have recently aligned with the ADC, including former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi.
