In a bid to strengthen security infrastructure in the South‑East, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has sanctioned a significant expansion of land for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to build a new training base at the site of the upcoming Abia Airport.

On Tuesday, March 10, Governor Otti approved the allocation of 100 hectares of land within the airport project area — up from the 50 hectares initially set aside — following a request from the NAF Ground Training Command delegation led by Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Gabriel Kehinde.

During talks at the Government House, the Air Force commander said the expanded land would allow for broader training operations, including plans for a Special Forces Training Centre geared toward jungle warfare and advanced exercises. He commended the proactive efforts of the Abia government in supporting security initiatives and noted that the state’s security posture stood out positively compared to neighbouring states.

Governor Otti praised the Air Force’s decision to establish the facility in Abia, noting that the state had already mobilised resources to prepare the site. He also hinted that the runway at the Abia Airport, a joint project with the federal government, is nearing completion — with the state handling runway construction and the federal side responsible for the terminal.

In addition, Otti directed that upgrades and renovations for Air Force accommodation and offices be fast‑tracked, aiming for handover by the end of April. The government has also pledged to ensure swift issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for the land to facilitate the Air Force’s operational planning.

Officials present at the meeting included top security advisers to the governor and senior state government representatives.
