The Abia State Government has launched a renewed campaign aimed at safeguarding forest reserves and improving environmental sustainability across several communities. The initiative focuses on restoring degraded forest areas while strengthening government oversight of protected lands in different parts of the state.
As part of the programme, officials from the Ministry of Environment recently visited forest locations in Isuikwuato, Ohafia, and Ikwuano Local Government Areas. During the field exercise, teams worked on clearing forest boundaries and creating fire prevention lines to reduce the risk of bush fires and illegal encroachment.
State authorities explained that the exercise forms the early stage of a broader conservation strategy that will involve fresh surveys and official documentation of forest reserve boundaries. The process is expected to help the government accurately determine protected areas and reinforce policies designed to preserve them.
The Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, said the programme aligns with the development agenda of Governor Alex Otti, who has emphasized the need for government institutions to deliver visible progress across sectors. According to him, strengthening environmental protection remains a key priority of the administration.
Officials also highlighted the role of local communities in the success of the project. Youths from host communities were engaged to support the work on the ground, providing them with temporary employment while encouraging them to participate in protecting natural resources within their environment.
The Director of Forestry in the ministry noted that the activity helped restore clear demarcations in areas where original boundary markers had disappeared over time. Community elders and residents assisted officials in identifying traditional land limits, making it easier to re-establish the borders of the reserves.
Beyond boundary restoration, the government is also preparing plans to introduce structured reforestation programmes in areas where forest cover has been severely depleted. The effort will involve planting new trees and encouraging natural vegetation growth to rebuild damaged ecosystems.
Authorities say the long-term objective is to strengthen biodiversity, support climate adaptation, and create opportunities for environmental investment. By working closely with local communities, the state hopes to preserve its forest resources while promoting sustainable development across Abia.
