Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has criticised the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The ex-midfielder expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to secure a place at the global tournament, describing the situation as unacceptable for a country with Nigeria’s football reputation. He stated that the repeated failure to reach the World Cup reflects deeper administrative problems within the country’s football management.

Mikel insisted that those in charge of the federation should take responsibility for the disappointing outcome and step down to allow new leadership to rebuild and reposition Nigerian football.

He noted that Nigeria has abundant football talent and passionate supporters, making the qualification failure even more painful for fans across the country. According to him, a nation with such potential should consistently compete at the highest level of international football.

The former Chelsea star also warned that several African countries are improving their football systems, and Nigeria risks falling behind if urgent reforms are not carried out.

Despite his criticism, Mikel urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Eagles while calling on football authorities to address the structural challenges affecting the team’s performance on the international stage.
