Opay Rejects Office Shutdown Claims, Says Tax Notice Affects All Payment Firms

Fintech firm Opay Digital Services Limited has stepped out to correct misinformation suggesting its offices in Lagos and Abuja were sealed over tax issues. The company insists its premises remain open and it is operating as normal.

In an official statement, Opay denied any closure of its Nigerian offices, calling the reports circulating on social media and other platforms “false and misleading.” The company emphasised that it continues to serve its customers, partners, and merchants without interruption.

Opay clarified that the source of confusion appears to be a recent directive from the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) asking payment platforms to clearly itemise statutory charges in their apps to improve transparency and simplify reconciliation. According to the fintech company, this instruction applies industry‑wide and was not aimed specifically at Opay.

The firm also stressed that it complies with all tax and regulatory requirements and works closely with relevant authorities to ensure ongoing adherence to the law. Opay characterised the selective reporting of the notice as unfair and potentially harmful to its reputation.

Finally, Opay reassured users that there has been no disruption to its services and reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital financial ecosystem.
