The Ondo State Government has announced a new tax policy targeting social events such as weddings, funerals, birthday parties and naming ceremonies as part of efforts to boost its internally generated revenue. The levy will be implemented through the state’s internal revenue service and will apply to various gatherings held across the state.

According to the new arrangement, organisers of private social events will be required to pay between ₦20,000 and ₦25,000 before hosting their programmes. Corporate events and larger gatherings are expected to attract a higher fee, with authorities setting a fixed charge of ₦50,000 per event.

Government officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen revenue generation while also improving monitoring and regulation of entertainment and event-related activities taking place in halls, open spaces and other venues.

The policy has generated mixed reactions among residents and event planners. While some people worry the levy may increase the cost of organising ceremonies, others believe the funds could support development projects if managed effectively by the state government.
