Kano, Kano State, Nigeria – The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, hosted a private meeting on Tuesday night with a delegation representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the historic Gidan Rumfa palace. The meeting followed an Iftar dinner for senior government officials and has intensified speculation about the state government’s stance in the ongoing Kano emirship dispute.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, confirmed the meeting in a Facebook post on Wednesday. According to Tofa, the delegation included the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim; the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Sulaiman Wali Sani; and himself. He wrote: “Shortly after the Iftar at Emir’s Palace, the governor’s delegation had a closed-door meeting with His Highness.”
The discussions come amid uncertainty over this year’s Durbar festival, a centuries-old cultural event held in Kano to mark major Islamic celebrations. Conflicting statements from officials have left residents unsure whether the festival will proceed as scheduled.
The current tensions stem from a legal challenge over the Kano emirship. Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as Emir in 2024 by Governor Yusuf after a previous removal, but Aminu Ado Bayero continues to contest his dethronement in court. While the state government has hinted at a possible resolution, the Iftar and subsequent private talks are viewed by many as a sign of closer ties between Sanusi II and the state administration.
As the Sallah festival nears, attention is turning to who will lead the Durbar procession and under whose authority. Observers say the outcome of these talks could affect both local traditions and political alliances in Kano State.
The ongoing Emirship dispute remains a source of political tension, drawing national and international attention as northern Nigeria’s festival season approaches.
