Kano, Nigeria – A fire outbreak has destroyed three residential buildings in the Gaida area near Fatima Bread in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, northern Nigeria.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at around 11:05 a.m. (WAT), the Kano State Fire Service confirmed in a statement on Wednesday. According to the agency, a resident, Aminu Bello, alerted authorities after flames broke out near an electrical transformer.

Firefighters from the agency’s headquarters, along with teams from Sharada and Rijiyar Zaki stations, rushed to the scene. They found a 50-by-50-foot open space housing the transformer engulfed in flames, which quickly spread to nearby homes.

The first building, a ground-floor structure measuring 30 by 25 feet, was completely destroyed. A second one-storey building (30 by 30 feet) suffered severe damage, particularly on its upper floor. A third ground-floor house (30 by 30 feet) with two rooms was also razed.

Investigations traced the fire to an electrical spark from the transformer site, raising concerns about residential infrastructure safety. Kano State Fire Service Director, Sani Anas, urged residents to exercise caution with open flames and electrical appliances to prevent similar disasters.

No casualties have been reported so far, but the destruction is expected to affect multiple families and cause significant financial losses.

The incident adds to a recent spate of fire outbreaks across Nigeria, including a separate blaze in Offa, Kwara State, which destroyed six shops and goods worth millions of naira after flames spread from nearby bush burning. Authorities continue to advise residents nationwide to prioritize fire safety and report emergencies promptly.
