Tropical Cyclone Narelle Weakens but Continues to Batter Far North Queensland

Tropical Cyclone Narelle has been downgraded to a category two system as it moves across Cape York in Far North Queensland, but authorities warn it still poses a serious threat with destructive winds, heavy rainfall and flooding.

The cyclone, which earlier tracked as a category three system, is now heading west towards the Gulf of Carpentaria, impacting communities including Weipa and Aurukun. Wind gusts of up to 150–160km/h remain possible, along with intense rainfall that could exceed 500mm in some areas.

Residents across the Cape have reported fallen trees, damaged roofs and rising floodwaters. More than 1,100 properties are currently without power, with energy crews on standby to begin restoration work once conditions improve. Officials say repairs may take time due to the challenges of accessing remote communities.

Telecommunications have also been affected, with services down in Aurukun. Technicians are expected to be deployed as soon as it is safe to reach the area.

Flooding remains a major concern, with rivers continuing to rise after already heavy rainfall earlier in the year. Authorities have warned residents not to drive through floodwaters, stressing that conditions remain dangerous.

Emergency services say some communities, such as Cooktown, have so far avoided major damage, with only minor clean-up operations underway. However, officials caution that the situation could worsen as the system progresses westward.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said affected communities were well prepared but warned that the combined threats of strong winds, storm surges and flooding remain significant.

Road closures across the region are also limiting access, with several major routes cut off due to flooding.

Meanwhile, coastal erosion has caused damage in parts of the Cairns region, including at Holloways Beach, where local officials described the impact as severe.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay updated through official warnings as the cyclone moves across the region.
