Tensions are rising within the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as the upcoming national leadership election approaches. A health governance expert has urged all parties to follow the association’s constitution and respect the rights of members during the process.

The dispute began after several candidates were disqualified over alleged incomplete nomination forms. Critics argue that the disqualifications may not fully align with the association’s established procedures, raising concerns about fairness and transparency.

Faithful Miebaka, founder of the Medical Jurisprudence Advocacy Initiative, noted that while the screening committee has the authority to assess nominations, the process must be conducted consistently and according to clear rules to avoid legal challenges.

The expert emphasized that protecting members’ rights and maintaining transparent procedures are critical for preserving trust in the association. Calls have also grown for reconsideration of disqualified candidates to ensure the election remains credible and inclusive.
