A fire at Murtala Muhammed International Airport recently disrupted the airport’s main control systems, prompting authorities to act swiftly to restore normal flight operations. In response, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has introduced a mobile air traffic control tower to manage incoming and outgoing flights while repairs continue.
The new mobile unit comes with updated communication and navigation equipment, allowing controllers to maintain safe distances between aircraft and coordinate landings and takeoffs efficiently. Airport officials emphasized that this setup will prevent further delays and cancellations during the recovery period.
To enhance functionality and safety, the mobile tower has been fitted with backup power, surveillance cameras, and solar lighting. These additions ensure the system remains operational even under challenging conditions, providing continuous support to both staff and passengers.
Looking ahead, NAMA plans to deploy an additional mobile tower at a separate location within the airport. This secondary facility is intended to serve as a contingency, ensuring that air traffic control remains uninterrupted in case of future emergencies or equipment failures.
