Police on High Alert in Anambra Over Chieftaincy Dispute

Security authorities in Awka, Anambra State, have stepped up patrols amid a growing dispute over who should be recognised as the traditional leader of the community. The state police command warned that rising tensions following a recent panel report could disrupt peace and has deployed units ready to respond to any unrest.

Officers from rapid response and anti‑cult teams are actively patrolling, gathering intelligence, and maintaining a visible presence in key neighbourhoods to deter possible trouble. Residents and community leaders have been urged to stay calm, avoid inflammatory remarks, and allow disagreements to be resolved peacefully.

The heightened security follows a government‑appointed panel’s recommendations on the rightful occupant of the traditional seat, a decision that has stirred strong reactions from opposing groups in the area. State authorities are working to prevent clashes as both sides await further developments.

The governor has instructed the police to enforce the panel’s findings and protect public safety, emphasizing that anyone involved in actions that threaten order will face legal consequences.
