A land dispute in Enugu State escalated on Monday as residents of the Etiti Ngwo Community staged a demonstration against what they describe as a disregard for a Supreme Court ruling. The community claims that state agencies have continued actions on the disputed land despite court orders confirming their ownership rights.
The protesters marched to the Enugu Government House, carrying banners and demanding immediate intervention from the state authorities. Community leaders accused certain officials of colluding with rival parties, warning that continued violations could spark further unrest.
Leaders highlighted that both the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court had previously settled the land ownership in their favor, but they allege that demolitions and unauthorized reallocations have persisted, undermining the judiciary’s authority.
In response, state representatives maintained that the land remains under federal oversight and is managed through the proper agencies. However, this position has been strongly rejected by residents, who insist that legal verdicts clearly favor their claim.
The protest reflects wider frustrations over unresolved land disputes in the region, with community members urging transparency, respect for the rule of law, and prompt enforcement of court decisions to prevent future conflicts.
