A major explosion has rocked an oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, sending towering flames and thick black smoke into the air and prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby communities.

The blast occurred late Monday at a Valero Energy facility, reportedly originating from one of its processing units. Residents described hearing a powerful explosion that rattled buildings, while footage circulating online showed intense fire visible from several miles away.

Emergency officials swiftly advised people in surrounding areas to remain indoors as a safety measure.

Valero Energy confirmed the incident, stating that all refinery workers had been accounted for. However, the company has yet to release information on possible injuries or the extent of the damage, as investigations into the cause continue.

The Port Arthur refinery is among the largest in the United States, processing significant volumes of crude oil into products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The incident has raised concerns about potential disruptions to fuel supply, particularly along the Gulf Coast.

Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the explosion or provided a timeline for when operations might resume. Emergency crews remain on site as residents await further updates.
