Abia State is preparing for a reimagined International Women’s Day celebration in 2026, with authorities placing philanthropy and community service at the center of activities planned across the state.

The initiative is being coordinated by the Ministry of Women Affairs alongside the Office of the First Lady, with officials highlighting a renewed push to encourage women to take active roles in supporting vulnerable populations. The announcement followed a recent State Executive Council session led by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.

In a departure from the global March 8 schedule, organizers in Abia have opted to hold the event on March 31. The decision, according to government representatives, is intended to maximize attendance and create a more inclusive and impactful experience for participants.

The gathering will be hosted at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, where women from different sectors are expected to converge. The programme will revolve around the theme “Give to Gain,” promoting the idea that acts of generosity can drive meaningful social change.

Officials say the event will attract a broad mix of attendees, including entrepreneurs, professionals, and grassroots leaders, all united by a shared goal of advancing women’s empowerment while strengthening support systems for disadvantaged communities across the state.
