Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has withdrawn recognition of the current leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following a worsening internal dispute within the party.
As part of its action, the Commission removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official records, where they had been listed as national chairman and national secretary. INEC also declined to acknowledge Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking legitimacy through the courts.
The Commission announced that it would suspend all official dealings with any faction of the party and would not supervise conventions or congresses linked to the rival groups until the ongoing legal battle is resolved.
This development follows a prolonged leadership struggle within the ADC, further complicated by recent court rulings that have left the party’s structure in uncertainty. With multiple claims to authority and conflicting legal interpretations, the situation has continued to escalate.
INEC emphasized that its decision is aimed at maintaining neutrality while the matter is being settled in court. The Commission also urged all parties involved to avoid actions that could disrupt preparations for future elections, particularly as the country looks ahead to 2027.
Legal representatives from opposing sides have continued to pressure the Commission with differing demands, deepening the standoff. Until a final judicial pronouncement is made, INEC says it will keep its distance from all factions within the party.
