Rights Group Demands Investigation After Teenager was Killed by Military Gunfire in Maiduguri

A human rights organisation has urged Nigerian officials to carry out a full and transparent investigation into the tragic death of a 14‑year‑old girl in Maiduguri, Borno State, highlighting concerns over the careless use of firearms by security forces.

The teenager, who was inside her family home on April 4, was struck and killed by a stray bullet that was allegedly fired by military personnel celebrating at a nearby wedding event.

According to witnesses, the young girl had been preparing for a family wedding and was indoors when the bullet struck her, prompting grief and anger among her relatives and local residents.

In response, the rights group described the incident as avoidable and called on the government to hold those responsible to account, stressing that such incidents put civilian lives at unnecessary risk.

The organisation is pushing for a thorough, impartial inquiry to determine how the incident occurred and to ensure justice for the victim’s family.

Officials from the military and police have not yet provided public comments on the case.
