Community pharmacists in Lagos State are advocating for a broader role in Nigeria’s health system, insisting their work should go beyond simply dispensing medicines. At a recent conference, the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Lagos chapter, emphasized that continuous training and the adoption of digital tools are key to improving healthcare services.
Speakers highlighted the evolving role of pharmacists, who increasingly provide counselling, consultations, immunization support, and other clinical services. They noted that pharmacies are often the first point of contact for patients, particularly in areas where primary healthcare centres are overburdened, and argued that pharmacists should be more integrated into the national health system.
Technology was a major focus during discussions, with participants stressing that digital innovations — including electronic health records, data systems, and artificial intelligence tools — can help pharmacies deliver safer, faster, and more effective care. They urged pharmacists to embrace digital skills and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to meet patients’ changing needs.
Overall, pharmacists are calling for expanded responsibilities and stronger integration of technology and training in their practice to enhance healthcare outcomes across the country.
