Supporters of the Obidient Movement are gearing up for a large-scale demonstration targeting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), amid rising political tension in the country. The group’s leadership says their planned protest, dubbed #OccupyINEC, is aimed at expressing dissatisfaction with the electoral body’s recent actions.
The movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, stated that organisers are mobilising members across Nigeria. He added that the exact date of the protest is being kept under wraps to prevent interference but assured that the rally will proceed peacefully once preparations are complete.
Tanko criticised INEC for perceived bias and for contributing to divisions within opposition parties. Supporters of the movement believe this undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process and are calling for accountability from the commission’s leadership.
The Obidients’ demands include reforms to strengthen electoral fairness and safeguard multi-party democracy. They argue that many Nigerians feel ignored by key institutions and hope the protest will highlight the need for change and respect for citizens’ political rights.
