Former U.S. diplomat Tibor Nagy has expressed concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

He highlighted that ongoing political tensions and disputes among key actors could create a more volatile environment as the elections approach. Nagy warned that any suppression of opposition voices or weakening of political competition might undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

The diplomat also emphasized the importance of strong institutions and fairness to maintain public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy. He urged both domestic stakeholders and the international community to closely monitor developments, noting that Nigeria’s stability is crucial for the wider African region.

With nationwide elections slated for 2027 to elect a president, lawmakers, and state leaders, Nagy’s comments serve as a reminder of the need for transparency, inclusiveness, and respect for democratic norms in the lead-up to the polls.
