The Akwa Ibom State government has moved to strengthen mental health support by approving a new Mental Health Law aimed at protecting and empowering residents living with mental health conditions.
The law will provide a framework for the creation of dedicated mental health centres, enhance access to counselling and therapy, and set standards for patient care across the state. It also calls for training healthcare workers to better identify and treat mental health issues.
Lawmakers said the legislation seeks to combat stigma, encourage early treatment, and integrate mental health services into the wider healthcare system. Officials noted that it will also safeguard the rights of patients and ensure they receive appropriate support.
Community leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a long-overdue effort to address mental health challenges and improve the quality of life for residents in Akwa Ibom.
With the passage of this law, the state joins a growing number of Nigerian regions prioritizing mental wellness and setting a precedent for comprehensive care.
