Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has urged Nigerians to take leadership decisions more seriously, stressing that political choices play a decisive role in shaping economic realities.
Speaking on Thursday at the 5th Annual Lecture Series of The Niche held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, Otti delivered a lecture titled “Governing the Economy: Choices, Trade-offs and National Priorities.” He argued that Nigeria’s economic challenges are deeply structural and cannot be resolved through quick fixes or emotional policy responses.
According to the governor, there is a strong link between political decisions and citizens’ everyday experiences, noting that competent leadership and sound institutions are critical to reversing economic decline. While rejecting pessimism about Nigeria’s future, he cautioned that meaningful progress requires deliberate, tough decisions rather than wishful thinking.
Otti called for active citizenship and informed political participation, urging Nigerians to go beyond voting by scrutinizing leaders and their economic ideas. He warned that public apathy contributes to institutional decay and worsens economic hardship, adding that leadership selection should be viewed as a long-term economic decision.
Using Abia State as an example, Otti said poor governance in the past led to economic decline, weakened institutions, and loss of public trust. He noted, however, that a shift toward competence-driven leadership has helped restore stability, rebuild confidence, and attract investment.
He also emphasized that governance and economic management are closely linked, warning that political opportunism continues to undermine development. Strong institutions, he said, can only thrive where there is discipline and integrity in leadership.
In his opening remarks, Managing Director of Acclaim Publishers and Editor-in-Chief of The Niche, Ikechukwu Amaechi, described the lecture series as a platform to promote accountability and national reflection on governance, especially ahead of future elections.
The event was chaired by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who praised Otti’s intellectual depth and leadership style. He reminded public officials that governance is a responsibility, not a means for personal enrichment, and warned against the growing commercialization of politics.
Also speaking, the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, expressed concern over Nigeria’s governance structure while remaining optimistic about the country’s future. He advocated constitutional reforms to allow independent candidates, arguing that the dominance of political parties has made politics overly monetized.
A panel discussion featuring Prof. Ano Anyanwu, Dr. Jumoke Ogunleye, and Comrade Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for measurable results in governance, stressing that leaders should be judged by tangible outcomes rather than promises.
Retired General Ike Nwachukwu, in his goodwill message, commended Otti’s efforts in Abia State and urged citizens to support effective leadership to sustain development.
The event drew prominent figures from across politics, academia, and industry, reinforcing the call for responsible leadership and stronger institutions as foundations for Nigeria’s economic progress.
