Members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the National Assembly have raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s request to secure a $516.3 million external loan, urging lawmakers to thoroughly examine the proposal before granting approval.
The legislators questioned the necessity and timing of the borrowing, stressing that Nigerians deserve a clear explanation of how the funds will be used and repaid. They warned that continued reliance on loans without detailed accountability could worsen the country’s financial burden.
According to the lawmakers, the government has yet to present a convincing repayment framework, prompting fears about the long-term implications of the debt. They insisted that any borrowing plan must be backed by transparency and a well-defined strategy to ensure it benefits the economy.
The ADC caucus further called on the National Assembly to exercise its oversight responsibility by scrutinizing the loan request in detail, emphasizing that fiscal decisions of such magnitude should prioritize the nation’s economic stability and public interest.
