Flight operations across Nigeria could face major disruption as aviation ground handling companies issue a seven-day ultimatum to indigenous airlines over unpaid debts exceeding N9 billion.
The Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria (AGHAN), representing five key service providers, warned that both domestic and international flights may be affected if the задолженности are not cleared. The association accused airline operators of failing to settle outstanding payments, putting significant strain on ground handling operations.
AGHAN members—including Skyway Handling Company of Nigeria (SAHCO) Plc, Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc, Butake Handling Company, Precision Handling Company Limited, and Swissport Handling Company—provide essential services such as passenger check-in, baggage handling, aircraft marshalling, and ramp operations.
In a letter dated April 21, 2026, and addressed to the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), AGHAN leadership—Chairman Olaniyi Adigun and Vice Chairman Ahmed Bashir—stated that continued non-payment has severely impacted the financial stability and operational efficiency of its members.
Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue, the association said airline operators have failed to honour payment commitments. As a result, AGHAN warned that its members may be forced to withdraw services starting Tuesday, April 28, if the debts remain unpaid.
The letter, also copied to key aviation and security authorities, stressed that the situation threatens safe and sustainable service delivery, while placing heavy financial pressure on affected companies and their workforce.
AGHAN expressed hope that the ultimatum would prompt swift action from the airlines to avoid a shutdown. It also apologised to passengers for any inconvenience and reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the matter amicably.
