The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has strengthened efforts to improve child healthcare by committing about N70 million to support surgical treatment for children in need across public hospitals in the state.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Orunsii Wellcare Foundation, is aimed at easing the financial burden on families struggling to afford critical operations for their children.
During visits to selected general hospitals, beneficiaries were identified and funding support was directed toward paediatric surgical cases, ensuring that vulnerable children receive timely medical attention without cost barriers.
Dr. Sanwo-Olu explained that the intervention aligns with the state’s broader social welfare agenda, which prioritises healthcare access for children, women, and other vulnerable groups. She noted that many families delay or abandon treatment due to lack of funds, a situation the initiative seeks to address.
She also called on individuals, corporate organisations, and philanthropic groups to support similar healthcare-driven interventions, stressing that collective action is key to improving child survival and wellbeing in the state.
The foundation’s partners said the programme is designed to be sustained, with more hospitals and patients expected to benefit in future phases of the intervention.
