Atletico Madrid and Arsenal battled to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at the Metropolitano Stadium in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash, with VAR decisions taking center stage.

Arsenal struck first in the opening half, as Viktor Gyökeres capped off the visitors’ early dominance with a composed finish to give Mikel Arteta’s side the lead. Atletico Madrid, however, responded with resilience after the break, drawing level through Julián Álvarez, who calmly converted from the penalty spot.

The game’s biggest talking point came in the 80th minute when referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded Arsenal a second penalty following a challenge on Eberechi Eze. After a prolonged VAR review, the decision was overturned, sparking reactions from both sides.

Arteta attempted to tilt the match in Arsenal’s favor with a triple substitution in the 70th minute, introducing Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Leandro Trossard. Despite the changes, Atletico looked more threatening late on, with Ademola Lookman and Nahuel Molina going close during stoppage time.

With the tie finely poised, attention now shifts to the return leg at the Emirates Stadium next week. Both teams will be aiming to secure a place in the final, where either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich await.
