The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has reaffirmed the crucial role of the media in ensuring credible elections. He described the media as a key pillar in achieving electoral success and urged media outlets to actively combat vote buying and election-related violence through their platforms.

Dr. Agboke made these remarks on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the management of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Osogbo, to the INEC State office. He emphasized that INEC relies heavily on media for its operations, noting that effective collaboration rooted in social responsibility is vital for success. “Without the media, we are doing nothing. It is a fundamental pillar of our work,” he said, highlighting NTA’s significant support during the 2023 general elections.

He also stressed the importance of public enlightenment ahead of major electoral events, particularly the upcoming 2026 Osun gubernatorial election. Dr. Agboke reminded the media of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and the official issuance of the election notice. He further urged media outlets to help discourage underage and ineligible individuals from attempting to register, advising eligible voters to register at their local government areas.

Responding, the General Manager of NTA Osogbo, Abdulrazaq Ajala, who assumed office on May 28, 2025, expressed commitment to strengthening the existing partnership with INEC. He pledged full media coverage of INEC’s activities, stating, “NTA and INEC are one, and we are ready for you.” Ajala emphasized the need for continued collaboration to promote transparency and voter education across the state.
