Abia Partners with International Solar Alliance, Eyes $750m World Bank Boost for Renewable Energy and Mini-Grid Development

The Abia State Government has announced a strategic partnership with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to develop regulatory frameworks for mini-grid electricity systems, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy development in the state.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Sir Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Monday at the Government House in Umuahia. The briefing followed the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Governor Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.

Prince Kanu revealed that the ISA—an intergovernmental alliance of 123 member nations—is collaborating with Abia to help drive investment in the power sector. Through this partnership, the state aims to attract private capital, boost energy access, and advance its clean energy goals. ISA’s technical and institutional assistance is expected to accelerate Abia’s pursuit of energy security and environmental sustainability.

“The initiative will enable ISA to support the state in developing a robust solar power ecosystem that not only powers homes and businesses but also attracts investment and fosters climate resilience,” Kanu said.

He added that, with the recent enactment of the Abia State Electricity Law 2025, the government is now equipped to fully engage in the electricity value chain. This legal backing is part of the administration’s broader plan to industrialize the state and enhance infrastructure.

Kanu also announced that Abia will participate in the World Bank’s Distributed Access to Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) programme, a $750 million renewable energy development initiative. The programme is expected to significantly improve power supply in the state and bolster economic growth.

He reaffirmed the Otti administration’s commitment to leveraging renewable energy to support job creation, industrial expansion, and sustainable development across Abia.
