Japan Reaffirms Commitment to Africa at TICAD Summit

Yokohama Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Africa during his address at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama. The event, under the theme “Co-creating Innovative Solutions with Africa,” highlights Japan’s dedication to collaborative development efforts on the continent.

Among those present was South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is seizing this opportunity to promote Pretoria’s G20 presidency and engage in bilateral economic discussions with Japan.

The TICAD Summit comes at a crucial time when the world faces unprecedented challenges to global peace and security, including ongoing conflicts and disruptions to international trade. African nations are looking to their partnership with Japan to help them navigate these turbulent times.

In his remarks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted, “We meet at a time of interconnected crises and deep inequalities. Tackling these crises requires a clear focus not only on development for Africa, but on development with Africa. I salute Japan for making this the focus of its cooperation with the continent.”

Since its inception in 1993, TICAD has served as a platform for Japan to support Africa’s development. AU Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf urged stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, and civil society, to renew their commitment to innovative collaboration. “Together we can co-create solutions that are not only transformative but also sustainable and inclusive, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he stated.

For President Ramaphosa, the conference represents a busy agenda filled with meetings alongside various business leaders attending the summit.

Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized the importance of Japan’s relationship with Africa, stating, “Just as we once did in Asia, we the people of Japan wish to laugh, cry, and break a sweat alongside the people of Africa.”

Health emerges as one of the key focal points of discussion in Yokohama, reflecting Japan’s goal to solidify its ties with Africa, especially amid China’s growing influence on the continent.
