The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has emphasized its dedication to empowering youths and women, pledging that 50 percent of all elective and appointive positions will be reserved for these groups. The confirmation came from Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, ADC National Secretary and former Governor of Osun State, during a recent affirmation ceremony in Lagos.

In a speech titled “When Good People Unite, Nigerians Win,” Aregbesola welcomed new members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and other political affiliations to the ADC, asserting that the party aims to “rescue Nigeria” by harnessing the potential of its youth.

Aregbesola stressed the importance of empowering the youth, highlighting that the ADC’s constitution supports significant roles for both youth and women in leadership positions. He expressed concern over the current leadership’s handling of the nation’s challenges, stating that it is crucial to move beyond partisanship to forge a unified path forward.

“ADC’s constitution boldly emphasizes the representation of youth and women,” he remarked, explaining that the structure ensures a combined representation of at least 50 percent. “This is not tokenism; it is a recognition of the need to give voice and space to those who have been historically underrepresented.”

The former Minister of the Interior warned that any government neglecting the welfare of its citizens risks losing relevance. “The people must be the center of politics and governance. We must act now to save the nation,” Aregbesola said, emphasizing the urgency of ADC’s mission to build a new Nigeria for future generations.

He also urged party members to avoid engaging in divisive debates with “dying dinosaurs” of outdated political structures, advocating instead for a focus on grassroots efforts to strengthen the party. Aregbesola criticized both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming they have lost their vision and become mere political entities.

During the event, Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, and other comrades officially transitioned to the ADC, describing the movement as a pivotal step towards building a more inclusive Nigeria. “This is a gathering of shared values and progressive ideas, united in our commitment to reshape our nation’s future,” Ogunkelu proclaimed.

Dr. Segun Osho, Chairman of Local Government Area LP Chairmen in Lagos State, also voiced his support for the ADC, emphasizing the need for collective action to rescue the country.

Senior ADC figures, including Sen. Kolawole Ogunwale, urged members to unite and work diligently towards the party’s success. Newly integrated members, including notable figures from the PDP, were formally introduced to the ADC, with party leaders encouraging them to think strategically and work in unison.

The ADC continues to position itself as a credible alternative in Nigerian politics, with a focus on youth involvement and inclusive governance as key pillars of its agenda.
