The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has handed the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to address lingering issues affecting the university system.

The decision followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday at the University of Abuja. ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed this in a statement he personally signed and released in Abuja.

“At the NEC meeting held at the University of Abuja on September 28, 2025, the union lamented government’s neglect of the university system and its persistent refusal to meet our demands. Accordingly, ASUU has given the Federal Government 14 days to resolve these issues. Failure to do so may compel the union to embark on a two-week warning strike, which could escalate into a total and indefinite strike,” the statement read.

It will be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had set up a committee chaired by Permanent Secretary Abel Enitan to review ASUU’s proposals, aimed at stabilising the university system. However, no decision from the committee has been made public as of press time.

ASUU’s long-standing demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, revitalisation funding for universities, payment of outstanding salary arrears, and the establishment of sustainable financing mechanisms.
