As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, the nation is once again at a crossroads, caught between the pride of its past and the promise of its future. Joining millions of Nigerians in reflection, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has called on citizens to see this milestone as more than a date on the calendar but as a reminder of the duty owed to generations yet unborn.

In his message, Orji struck a tone both hopeful and sober. He acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians who, despite economic hardship, insecurity, and political uncertainty, have continued to hold onto faith in their country. “The spirit of our people remains unbroken,” he said, “but we must renew our commitment to justice, fairness, and transparent leadership if we must secure the brighter tomorrow we all desire.”

Orji’s reflections carried the weight of history. He paid tribute to the nation’s founding fathers, whose sacrifices 65 years ago secured Nigeria’s independence. Yet, he lamented how the dream of a united and prosperous nation has often been clouded by leadership deficits and divisions that have weakened the country’s progress.

Still, his message was not one of despair. He pointed to the nation’s vast human and natural resources, noting that with sincerity of purpose, servant-leadership, and inclusivity in governance, Nigeria could chart a new course. “What Nigeria needs now is not more promises, but deliberate action — action that uplifts the poor, empowers the youth, and restores faith in the system,” he stressed.

Speaking directly to young people, Orji urged them to hold on to hope, innovation, and hard work as tools to shape a greater future. He reminded them that patriotism is not passive but active, requiring civic responsibility, accountability, and the courage to rise above self-interest.

At 65, Orji noted, Nigeria’s journey remains unfinished. The challenges are daunting, but the possibility of transformation is within reach. He concluded with a note of optimism: “Our country’s story is still being written. If we come together in unity and faith, we can turn this new chapter into one of renewal, growth, and pride for all Nigerians.”
