Remi Tinubu Urges Nigerians to Unite Against Child Sexual Abuse

First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to strengthen efforts to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during the commemoration of the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse 2025, she emphasised the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding children.

The event, themed “Strengthening the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse Through Evidence-Based Policy Making,” highlighted the importance of data-driven approaches to child protection.

Mrs. Tinubu called on parents, government agencies, civil society groups, traditional and religious leaders, as well as young people, to work together to create safe environments where children can grow without fear or harm.

She stressed that child protection must extend beyond rhetoric, requiring concrete actions informed by reliable research and effective policies.

The World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, observed annually on November 18, was initiated by the Council of Europe in 2015 as a global call to action. The United Nations adopted it in 2022 to raise awareness, promote understanding, and combat stigma surrounding child sexual abuse.
