Otti Says Kanu’s Conviction “Not the End of the Road,” Urges Calm in Abia

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has assured residents that the conviction of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by a Federal High Court in Abuja does not mark the end of efforts to secure his freedom.

Kanu, an indigene of Abia and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was on Thursday, November 20, 2025, found guilty of terrorism-related offences and sentenced to life imprisonment—a development that has left many residents in shock and distress.

Governor Otti recalled his longstanding opposition to the military invasion of Kanu’s Afaraukwu Umuahia home in September 2017, an incident that resulted in destruction and loss of lives. He noted that he had publicly condemned the action and advocated dialogue as the most effective approach to resolving IPOB-related issues.

Referencing his 2017 ThisDay column titled “Operation Python Dance: Killing a Fly With a Sledgehammer,” Otti said he had consistently provided suggestions that, if adopted, could have reduced tensions and promoted national unity. He maintained that the mishandling of the IPOB situation in its early stages contributed to the current crisis.

Otti revealed that he has held high-level engagements with federal authorities since December 22, 2023, exploring alternative resolutions. He said certain agreements had been reached, but their execution depended on the conclusion of Kanu’s trial, delayed until now.

“With judgement now delivered, I am confident that the agreed alternative resolution will begin,” he said, adding that Kanu was briefed on the strategy during a visit earlier in the year while he was in DSS custody.

He assured Abians that he has already activated the agreed plan and will continue to work until Kanu regains his freedom. He also expressed willingness to collaborate with other well-meaning Nigerians who genuinely seek a peaceful resolution.

Otti appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid statements or actions that could heighten tension or undermine ongoing negotiations with the federal government. He expressed optimism, saying the assurances he has received indicate that “a resolution is in sight.”

He also warned politicians against exploiting Kanu’s situation for political gain, urging them instead to support efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful outcome.

Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the issue through wisdom, diplomacy and high-level dialogue, with the ultimate goal of restoring lasting peace in the South-East.
