Lagos Government Demolishes Unauthorized Structures in Ikate Elegushi, Lekki–Ikoyi Areas

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has demolished several structures in the Ikate Elegushi area for lacking proper approvals.

Adu Ademuyiwa, LASBCA’s Director of Public Affairs, stated that the enforcement operation took place on Saturday, conducted jointly with the Office of Urban Development. The operation targeted buildings that violated construction regulations and encroached on drainage zones.

Sylvester Ogunkelu, Chairman of the Lagos State Assembly House Committee on Physical Development, participated in the exercise and reiterated the Assembly’s full support for efforts to maintain a safe and regulated built environment. He emphasized that compliance with building codes is essential, as unregulated developments threaten lives and strain infrastructure.

Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, said illegal constructions remain a major challenge for environmental sustainability and urban planning in Lagos. He affirmed the ministry’s commitment to assisting LASBCA in ensuring all building projects meet required standards.

Acting General Manager of LASBCA, Gbaye Florence, explained that the structures had been issued multiple notices, including stop-work and demolition orders, but owners failed to comply.

The enforcement team also targeted buildings along the Lekki–Ikoyi corridor constructed beneath high-tension power lines.

This action follows similar demolitions in areas such as Oworonshoki, Trade Fair, and Ikota. While property owners have expressed grievances over their losses, the Lagos State Government maintains that developers must obtain proper approvals before construction.
