Lagos Unveils Electric Ferries to Boost Sustainable Water Transport

The government of Lagos State has taken a major step toward cleaner urban mobility by rolling out electric ferries through a partnership with Caverton Marine. The new electric boats — the first of their kind in Africa — are part of efforts to reduce emissions, ease road traffic congestion, and provide safer, more sustainable commuting options on the city’s waterways.

Dubbed the “Electric OMIBUS,” these ferries are equipped with electric propulsion systems, running quietly and emitting no pollution, unlike traditional fuel‑powered boats.

Officials say the demonstration and deployment of the electric ferries align with broader plans to modernise Lagos’ transport infrastructure, reduce the environmental footprint, and improve daily commuting for millions living in the megacity.
