Abia State is set for a major transformation of its transportation sector with the rollout of electric buses, AI-powered traffic control systems, and new multimodal bus terminals, according to the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu.

Speaking in Umuahia at the Abia–Turkiye Investment Summit and Product Exhibition 2025, themed “Bridging Continents, Unlocking Prosperity,” Ukaegbu said the ongoing reform seeks to create a safer, cheaper and more efficient transport system for all residents.

“Transportation is more than movement, it connects communities, supports development across sectors and contributes significantly to state revenue,” he said.

Ukaegbu explained that the government’s target is to build a world-standard transport network, one that is safe, affordable, sustainable and inclusive. Priority areas, he noted, include enhanced public transport safety, a funding structure for the sector, and improved mobility for persons with disabilities, alongside stronger multimodal links across the state.

He highlighted significant progress already achieved, particularly the construction of the Abia Modern Bus Terminals in Umuahia and Aba. The terminals will feature integrated ticketing, retail spaces and advanced security systems. While the Umuahia terminal is expected to be completed before the end of 2025, Aba’s terminal is projected to become fully operational by May 2026.

The commissioner also disclosed that over 70 modern bus shelters had been installed in Aba and Umuahia, with more underway in Ohafia. Designed to enhance comfort, safety and accessibility, the shelters are part of efforts to improve urban mobility.

He further stated that upgraded road junctions, new traffic corridors, and lay-bays have eased congestion across major urban centres. The introduction of adaptive AI traffic lights, he said, has reduced waiting times by 25 per cent, allowing officials to monitor and regulate traffic remotely in real time.

On public transit improvements, Ukaegbu announced that Abia has begun deploying electric buses,  making it the second state in Nigeria to do so after Lagos.

“We have received 20 electric buses already, with 20 more arriving soon. Additional units coming in February will push us toward our goal of 100 buses,” he revealed. “They produce zero emissions, cost less to run and help us keep transport fares affordable.”

The state is also partnering with road safety organisations to improve driver training and ensure safer road use.

“We are committed to making Abia’s roads safer, and effective training for drivers and other users is central to that goal,” the commissioner added.
