At least four people were killed on Sunday evening after gunmen attacked Afor Market in the Nawfia community along the Onitsha–Awka Old Road, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The violence was confirmed by the Nawfia Progressive Union President‑General, who said security agencies have been notified and investigations are already underway.
According to the state police spokesman, the attack was believed to be linked to a clash between rival cult groups. He noted that just four days earlier, officers from the Special Anti-Cult Squad had apprehended two suspected gang members, but other members reportedly evaded capture and carried out the deadly market assault.
Witnesses said the assailants drove into the busy market in a black Lexus Jeep and opened fire indiscriminately before fleeing. Police arrived after the attackers had escaped, and preliminary evidence from the scene is guiding efforts to track down the perpetrators.
