Security operatives, acting on orders from the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, deployed tear gas on contractors who had blocked an entrance to the Secretariat in Abuja. The contractors, reportedly owed billions in unpaid debts by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), barricaded the gate to demand payment for services rendered.

Police moved in to disperse the contractors following Wike’s directive, escalating tensions between the FCTA and the contractors, many of whom insisted they were owed legitimate payments. Observers have criticised the use of force against contractors seeking compensation.

The incident highlights growing frustration among local contractors over unpaid contract debts, as the FCTA continues to enforce regulations and stricter oversight of public works.
