Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti announced on Tuesday that the state government has begun providing free buses to Abians living in Abuja and Lagos, ensuring they can travel home without cost. The initiative, part of a broader effort to support the diaspora community, will see the first batch of 20 electric buses hit the roads tomorrow, with the remaining 80 units scheduled to arrive in Abia next year.

Governor Otti said the fleet of 100 electric buses will be rolled out gradually, starting with the initial 20 vehicles that will operate on key routes between the federal capital and Lagos. From now until sometime in January, all Abians—whether they reside in the state or simply conduct business there—will be able to ride these buses free of charge.

The governor emphasized that the service is inclusive: “Once you live or do business in our state, you are Abian. We do not discriminate based on state of origin.” He added that the electric buses symbolize the state’s commitment to modern, sustainable transportation and to staying connected with its citizens wherever they are.

Officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Abia State Investment Authority are expected to oversee the rollout, while a dedicated helpline will be available for passengers to schedule rides and receive updates on the bus schedule. The program aims to ease the financial burden on Abians traveling home for holidays and to strengthen ties between the state and its residents abroad.
