NAMA Confirms Safe Air Travel Amid Harmattan Visibility Challenges

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has assured the public that air travel in Nigeria remains safe and fully operational despite the current Harmattan haze affecting visibility in parts of the country. The agency said its navigational systems and airport landing facilities continue to function normally, dismissing claims that poor visibility has compromised safety.

In a statement, NAMA’s spokesperson explained that all critical air navigation aids at federally managed airports are regularly maintained, checked, and calibrated according to international and national aviation standards. The agency stressed that these mandatory safety procedures are carried out by trained personnel using specialised aircraft and equipment to ensure reliability.

Officials also clarified that while the Harmattan haze can pose challenges to visibility, it does not indicate infrastructure failure or unfit conditions for flight operations. NAMA emphasised its collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to provide accurate weather updates and support safe flight management throughout the season.

The reassurance comes as discussions continue around weather‑related flight disruptions and the role of air navigation systems during periods of reduced visibility.
