CSO Demands Justice After Woman, Six Children Killed in Kano

The killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi, Kano State, has sparked renewed calls from civil society organisations for justice, accountability and stronger measures to address the root causes of violence, including drug abuse.

The Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) condemned the incident, describing it as “deeply disturbing” and a grave violation of the right to life. In a statement issued at the weekend and signed by its Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, the organisation said the killings had shocked public conscience and highlighted the growing insecurity within communities.

YOSPIS expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and residents of Dorayi, noting that the scale of the tragedy had intensified fear and grief in the area. The group called on the authorities to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice, stressing that accountability is critical to restoring public trust.

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to restore public confidence and serve as a deterrent,” the statement said.

The organisation commended the Kano State Police Command for the swift arrest of suspects connected to the killings, while urging law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough, transparent and expedited investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the crime.

Beyond the immediate case, YOSPIS linked the incident to broader social challenges, particularly the rising impact of drug abuse on public safety. It warned that substance abuse often fuels violent behaviour and contributes to the breakdown of families and communities.

The group called on the Kano State Government, security agencies, community and religious leaders, parents and civil society organisations to intensify efforts to combat drug abuse through prevention campaigns, rehabilitation services, youth empowerment programmes and community-based interventions.

“Fighting drug abuse is not optional; it is essential to protecting lives and restoring social order,” YOSPIS said, adding that violence against women and children must never be tolerated under any circumstances.
